Grey looked around carefully before taking his next step. Too many times had he gotten into a nasty fight with pythons or monitor lizards. Alligators he saw rarely nowadays, the once apex predator of the Everglades now knocked to the bottom of the food chain by man's carelessness. Shame too. They were a lot tastier than most of the stuff Grey found nowadays...
Grey finally decided and stepped forward on something mettalic. It immediately gave way and his booted foot sank beneath the murky water that was constantly present well inland. Grey sighed before tugging it out of the mud below. Damn, how he missed the old days when the storm drains actually removed all the water. And indoor plumbing...
Grey shifted immediately to his left as something fell behind a decaying building. He pointed his shotgun towards it, though he wasn't sure the damn thing still worked, it had been awhile since he last cleaned it. His gut instinct was to run, by he decided to take a chance. "Hello?"

Sunshine had been walking for hours with no idea of where she was going or what her plan was. Florida all looked the same to her, whether it was in perfect condition or completely destroyed. It was no wonder she hadn't seen anyone else around these parts. That is, except for a grumpy looking man who looked like he could use a Florida vacation.
She almost didn't see him, he did a really good job at blending in. Curious, bored, and still quite lost anyways, she kept her distance and followed him. She hadn't followed him for long before she clumsily blew her own cover by tripping over some building debris. She let out a squeak and her weaponry clacked as she fell over.
She laid quiet contemplating what to do when he called out to her. Standing up, she took a second to dust the dirt from herself and thought about walking back in the direction she came from, but decided to suck it up and have a confrontation.
Sunshine pulled out her crossbow and put an arrow in it just to be safe. "Hello," she answered, still using the building for cover.

Grey cocked his shotgun to show that he was not an easy target if whoever it was had malicious intent. But in that case, they should have attacked first. Now he was fully alert.
"Come out slowly. And don't give me an excuse to use this."
Grey eyed the shadow from the corner of the building, examining every inch of it. Whoever it was was armed as well. He could see the shadow of the crossbow. Not as well armed as he was, but still. Hopefully things wouldn't turn ugly.
"Put the crossbow down please. And don't try anything stupid either, buckshots is faster than arrows."

Sunshine unloaded her crossbow and put it back in its place on her back. It was her fault she was in this situation in the first place, no need to make it escalate anymore.
She slowly walked out with her hands in sight and noticed his shotgun for the first time. Sunshine looked him in the eyes. "You can see that I've put my weapons away," she waved her hands to emphasize the emptiness. "There's no need for you to aim your gun at me."

Grey lowered his gun, relieved that he wouldn't have to use it. He quickly lifted it again and aimed somewhere to the woman's right and fired, a geyser of water lifting from the ground as buckshot ripped through it. Seconds later, the corpse of an alligator floated upnto the surface, riddled with holes.
Grey looked back at the woman who stared right into his eyes. If he still had a soul, he would have sworn she could see it. But now there was a freshly killed alligator that wasn't getting any fresher. He gestured towards her and smiled.
"Well, you hungry?"

Sunshine jumped a little when he fired his shotgun. When he missed her, she turned to see what he shot at and saw a very large, very dead alligator. She turned back to him as as he gestured.
"I am hungry, actually." she looked at the ground. "Thanks for saving my ass from that thing. I don't enjoy being food."

Grey placed the shotgun over his shoulder before moving towards Sunshine. He extended his hand to hers, gripping it firmly.
"Name's Grey. Nice to see someone else survived the hurricanes."
Grey shuddered as he remembered the severity of those storms, how they ripped buildings from their very foundations and flailed them around like ragdolls. The howling of the 200 mph winds and the lashing waves beating against cities like they were drums. He then looked to the alligator and moved I've to it.
"Let's get this cleaned up, and get a fire going..."

Sunshine gave the man's hand a quick shake before letting go. "Nice to meet you, Grey."
They both looked at the alligator as he mentioned a fire and cleaning it. "I can go grab some wood for a fire," she touched the machete hanging from her hips, "I think my blade is a bit of an overkill for the task of cleaning him."
Sunshine turned on her heels and walked towards what was left of the buildings, hoping there would be something that could be used in a fire.
She quickly searched through a few of them and was able to come back with some chair legs and a few pieces of wooden planks. "It's not much, but I think it will serve its current purpose," she stated, placing them on the ground in front of her. "Now where would you like that fire? Or do you need some extra hands with the alligator first?"

Grey looked at Sunshine as she brought firewood. Not much, but it should do. "Is the interior of the building dry enough to start it there? I can handle the gator." Grey unsheathed the combat knife from his shoulder and started skinning the once mighty predator of the Everglades. Alligator skin could still come in handy. But what he wanted most was the tail. It would be nice to get a decent piece of cooked meat. Grey hoped that Sunshine had a flint or a lighter of her own. Trusting strangers with tools vital to his survival was not a habbit he planned on getting into.

"Yes, the inside is pretty dry." Sunshine picked up the wood. "I'll meet you in there." As she turned to walk away, she noticed Grey unsheathing his combat knife. "Nice knife." she said over her shoulder as she continued on her way.
Once inside the closest building, she set the wood down so she could pull a Zippo from her front, right pocket. It took her a few clicks, but eventually the old lighter produced a flame. I really need to find some lighter fluid soon, she reminded herself.
On her knees, she fiddled with the wood and the flame and after a few minutes, the wood started to catch. Closing the lid of her lighter, she scooted back a little and watched as the flames spread to the other pieces of firewood.
"We're all good in here," she called to him, proud of herself.

If only she knew how much blood had stained the blade over the years... Grey finally peeled off the last of the skin from the alligator, and then began the grueling task of gutting the damn thing. The tail may have been the best part, but these were no times to waste edible meat...
"Good. I'll be bringing this unlucky bastard in soon..."
Grey sank the blade into the stomach of the unfortunate beast, then made an incision upwards, reaching his hand inside to remove the intestines.
"You had better be worth it..." Grey grumbled to the alligator, annoyed at having to do this again.
