Some Background: Sunshine Owens was born to two modern-day hippies who were told they would never be able to have a child. She was, needless to say, the "sunshine" in their lives. Her family owned an organic shop in town with their own line of products, so she grew up on organic everything, from food to medication. TV and computers were not big in her household so she had to find other ways to entertain herself. As a child she would use her imagination in the backyard or help her mother around the house.
As she grew older, she tired of the organic lifestyle and chose to explore her interests. In her spare time, she learned how to fight and how to handle different weapons. She didn't care for guns, they were far too noisy for her tastes. In the end she took up crossbows. She felt guilty for deceiving her mother and father knowing they didn't care for weapons or fighting, but she knew that she couldn't put her life on hold forever. Even though her parents held very different views from her, she loved them very much. On her eighteenth birthday, she got two peace signs tattooed on her hips, one on each side, to symbolize her parents and where she came from.
When Sunshine graduated high school, she put college on hold and joined her parents' business. After all, they planned on giving it to her when they retired so she might as well learn the ropes early. Years went by and she never went to college. She grew comfortable working with her parents and getting new responsibilities in the shop, and with her being the only person on their payroll, she made a pretty sweet hourly wage. Not long after her twenty-first birthday did the world end. Her town was one of the indirect targets of a terrorist attack. She didn't even need to think, she grabbed her crossbow and arrows hidden in the back of her closet and ran to her parents at their shop. She drove with them as far as she could, the radio in her parents' minivan not offering much hope for anyone. The world was in an all out panic, and it was clear they wouldn't be returning to their previous home. They drove into the heaviest woods they could find and set up camp there. Her parents questioned where her crossbow came from and how, given the circumstances, they were proud of her and would've loved her just the same if she had been honest with them.
For a year, they remained a surviving family. They took family trips for scavenges and Sunshine taught her parents to use the weapons they found.
Sunshine went out for a hunt, leaving her parents at the camp. After what seemed like an eternity of waiting for a hunt, a fat little rabbit came into view. She aimed and was about to pull her crossbow's trigger when she heard what sounded like fighting back at the camp. Immediately, she stood and ran back to where she left her parents, hearing more of a struggle the closer she got. Making it back to the camp she found her parents dead and their weapons and ammo gone.
She wept quietly as she buried her parents, know that even though this was devastating, her parents would want her to continue to survive because they know that she was fully capable of doing so. They always told her that she was the reason that they had survived this long. Wanting to make her parents proud, she left their camp and has been wandering the wastes on her own ever since.
Weapon(s) of Choice: Her crossbow is her main weapon, but she also carries a machete on the side.
